Overview of culturally relevant and responsive music teaching:
Culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy is a teaching practice that increases student achievement, while developing cultural competence and fostering sociopolitical action in diverse or underrepresented communities (Ladson-Billings, 2015). Many iterations of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy have been made available to teachers in general education classrooms, however, there have been few applications of this pedagogy in music.
We are interested in discussing the need for implementing culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy in music education and offer a framework suitable for music teaching and learning.
The Framework for Culturally Relevant and Responsive Music Teaching can be distilled into four quadrants: (a) teacher competencies, (b) informed choices, (c) authenticity, and (d) holistic/comparative lessons. The framework is grounded in Ladson-Billings’ (1995b) model for culturally relevant pedagogy.
Additionally, our work provides an overview of culturally relevant and culturally responsive pedagogical models, and discusses the impact of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogical practices with students.
