Culturally Relevant and Responsive Teaching in Music
Welcome! We hope you will explore the pages of our website and get involved with our ideas and studies. Many iterations of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy have been made available to teachers in general education classrooms, however, there have been few applications of this pedagogy in music.
We are interested in discussing the need for implementing culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy in music education and offer a framework suitable for music teaching and learning.
The Framework for Culturally Relevant and Responsive Music Teaching can be distilled into four quadrants: (a) teacher competencies, (b) informed choices, (c) authenticity, and (d) holistic/comparative lessons. The framework is grounded in Ladson-Billings’ (1995b) model for culturally relevant pedagogy.
Additionally, our work provides an overview of culturally relevant and culturally responsive pedagogical models, and discusses the impact of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogical practices with students.
